Program Requirements

  • What is the difference between the intensive and standard programs?

Currently the Standard Program is only available to students enrolled in a PhD degree program. If you feel that you may be an eligible student, but are not enrolled in a PhD program, please contact the TL1 Program Coordinator at This email address is being protected from spambots. The intensive program is a multidisciplinary program, but is not available for PhD students, only medical and allied health students currently enrolled in a clinical doctoral degree program. While Intensive appointments may last no more than 12 months, Standard appointments may last anywhere from 9 months to 3 years. The TL1 Standards and Intensive Programs both require the same application, the same didactic coursework, mentored research, manuscript completion, seminar participation, and attendance at the same national meeting.

  • How many hours of coursework and seminars will I have monthly vs. research?

Dependent on the course of study planned, applicants may expect 80% of their time in the program to be devoted to research projects and roughly 20% to seminars and coursework. All trainees are required to pursue their research training full-time, normally defined as 40 hours per week. This includes both research projects and coursework.

  • Can I begin the program after June 1st?

All TL1 Summer Program Trainees must be available to participate full-time from June 1 – July 31. Students who are completing their second year in the Physical Therapy Program do not begin the TL1 Program until July 1st.

  • Can I take courses in my doctoral degree program while participating in the TL1?

TL1 Summer and Intensive trainees must devote full-time effort while participating in the TL1 Program, and may not enroll in courses for their doctoral degree program during their appointments in the TL1 Program. However, TL1 Standard Trainees will continue participating in their doctoral degree program concurrently with the TL1 Program.

  • As a Standard Trainee can I use the same thesis as that for my PhD degree?

No, the thesis for Standards must be different than the thesis used for completion of their PhD degree.
