Genomics in Medicine Seminar Richard Head

The Clinical Research Training Center is excited to announce the return of Introduction to the Principles and Practice of Clinical Research (IPPCR) for its fourth year!

This is a free, non-credit, self-paced online course provided by the NIH, as part of their commitment to the next generation of clinical researchers. Course content includes basic biostatistical and epidemiologic methods, ethical and legal issues, issues monitoring patient-oriented research, and needs for infrastructure in performing clinical research.

 Information for the upcoming 2018-2019 course year:

  • Registration opens on October 1, 2018. Scholars should select the “non-nih participant registration” option.
  • The course also begins on October 1, 2018 and ends on June 30, 2019.
  • The final exam will be available on the course website starting November 15, 2018 and closing on June 30, 2019 (exact times will be posted to our website).
  • Participants who complete the final exam and score at least 75% will receive a certificate of completion.

  • Course Spotlight! M88-582 Evaluation of Health Services Programs: Tuesdays, 5:30-8:00 pm; Coursemaster: Melissa Chapnick
    • Students are introduced to the fundamentals of program evaluation and learn about program evaluation methodology, methods of data collection and related measurement reliability and validity with practical applications and illustrations. Topics include: the link between program planning and program evaluation; evaluation research designs and their limitations; integrating process and outcome approaches; and utilization of evaluation results. Students also design an evaluation research proposal. This course is valuable to anyone wanting to develop, maintain, and evaluate health behavior and health education programs in clinical and community settings.
  • Courses are available on an open enrollment basis (for those not seeking the Master of Science or Graduate Certificate program) and qualify for the WashU Employee Tuition Assistance Benefit. All courses are offered in the late afternoon and evening for working professionals. The Clinical Research Training Center (CRTC) is accepting applications for programs providing advanced training in Clinical Investigation!

* Postdoctoral Mentored Training Program in Clinical Investigation (MTPCI)

  • 17 credit hour training program
  • 2-3 years to complete
  • 50-60% protected time required
  • US citizen or permanent residency required
  • May enroll in additional coursework to complete MSCI degree!

 * Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI)

  • 33 credit hour master’s degree
  • 1 to 5 years to complete
  • No protected time requirements
  • No citizenship requirements

Programs are eligible for the Washington University Faculty/Staff Tuition Benefit!

Funding Opportunities

It is with great excitement that we make you aware of a newly funded institutional K12 program called PEDSnet Scholars. This grant award is funded by AHRQ and PCORI and designed for Junior Faculty Interested in Learning Health System (LHS) Research—see RFA-HS-17-012 for more details.

The PEDSnet Scholars Program will prepare promising junior faculty to conduct LHS research that improves the efficiency and quality of health systems and the health outcomes of children and their families. PEDSnet scholars will learn and use new methods that leverage modern clinical data systems and test interventions in pragmatic child/family-centered outcomes research studies, embedded in diverse delivery systems and communities.

  • Two candidates will be chosen from Washington University who will compete with applicants from 7 other institutions for funding
  • Appointments will start in January, 2019, and last 2 to 3 years
  • Candidates must have a clinical or research degree
  • Includes up to $90,000 for salary, plus fringe, and a minimum of $15,000 of training related-expenses annually
  • Appointees must devote 75% protected time

R25 Cancer Genomics and Outcomes Research STRENGTH Program – Applications Now Open!
Application and additional information can be found at  The Cancer Genomics and Outcomes Research STRENGTH (Short-Term Education and Growth Through Hands-On Experience) is currently seeking applications.  This online training program is designed for postdoctoral scholars (PhDs or MDs) who are still training or Junior Faculty who are interested in pursuing patient oriented cancer research. Don’t forget to cite the ICTS grant(s) on your publications and presentations. Visit the CRTC grant citations webpage for complete citation information.

Please be sure to request a PMCID for any peer-reviewed article that is published citing an NIH grant.  The NIH will begin withholding funding from scholars and programs who do not comply with the Public Access Policy.

The Washington University Medical Center Housestaff Auxiliary (WUMCHA), a department of Barnes-Jewish Hospital, has acted as a support group to address the unique needs of spouses, partners, residents, fellows and attending physicians affiliated with the Medical Center since 1982. These people, the majority of whom have relocated to St. Louis, have special life stresses that WUMCHA strives to address.
