The Predoctoral Summer Visiting Program, sponsored by the Institute of Clinical and Translational Sciences (ICTS) of Washington University in St. Louis, provides support for first-year medical students from groups underrepresented in medicine as defined by the AAMC, including, but not limited to, African-American, Hispanic/Latino, and American Indian/Alaska Native, to participate in the Visiting Summer Program.
PSVP is designed to:
- Promote clinical and translational research training for medical and allied health care predoctoral students;

- To increase the number of students applying to clinical and translational training programs from groups underrepresented in medicine.
Objectives: A select group of PSVP students will be a part of the Predoctoral Clinical Research Training Program TL1 – Summer offered through the Clinical Research Training Center (CRTC). In this program, students take courses while completing their summer research. The CRTC Predoctoral Summer is an introductory program that supports a select group of trainees and exposes them to excellent patient-oriented researchers. In addition, the program will instruct students to:
- Design and conduct clinical research
- Analyze data
- Consider relevant ethical and legal issues
- Give oral presentations
- Develop and present scientific posters
Eligibility and Requirements: Doctoral-degree students in medicine, pharmacy, and other allied health professions who are under-represented minorities in medicine (as defined by the AAMC) and who wish to learn more about academic careers in clinical and translational research are eligible to apply. No prior clinical or translational research is required. Trainees accepted into the program must be able to commit full-time effort to the program for the 2-month duration of the appointment (June and July), successfully complete all course work, attend the Research Ethics Seminar and the Friday Summer Seminar Series, and participate in the annual Research Training Symposium and Poster Session in October immediately following the trainees’ appointment.
Required Courses:
- Analysis of Clinical Data (M17-5881, Summer, 1 credit)
- Designing Outcomes and Clinical Research Workshop (M17-504, Summer, 1 credit)
Stipend: Students receive the equivalent to the current NIH predoctoral stipend level ($2,196 per month).
Tuition: Tuition costs for required course work will be covered by the PSVP scholarship.
Housing: Housing is recommended at the new Core Apartment Residences, conveniently located on the medical campus.
Travel: Part of our scholarship award includes a stipend to offset travel costs. We are also happy to advise and assist with travel logistics if needed.
Application: Applications to the program are accepted online at crtc.wustl.edu. Applications are due on February 20. Prospective trainees are responsible for completing all required steps of the application, admission, enrollment process, and acknowledge in the personal statement that they want to be considered for the Predoctoral Summer Visiting Program (PSVP) Scholarship.
